Research to Support Payments Strategy

Payments used to be a stable, relatively predictable business for banks. No more. With the transition from paper-based to electronic transactions, the payments world has been thrown into turmoil, with both positive and negative outcomes. On the positive side, new opportunities for growth have opened up in technologies such as remote deposit capture and mobile payments. However, there are also risks of making the wrong bets in the face of so much rapid change. Now more than ever, bankers need solid research on which to base their payments strategies.

BAI has stepped up to the plate to meet this challenge with its 2008 Study of Consumer Payment Preferences, a joint effort of BAI Research and Dove Consulting. This study will provide an up-to-date, definitive guide on how consumers pay in different venues and why. It will also show how their payment habits are likely to change in the future. The fifth in a series, expanding upon research conducted from 1999 through 2005, the 2008 study will compare this year’s results with historical baseline data and analysis to provide unparalleled opportunities to track consumer adoption and substitution of various payment methods. Bringing you this research is just one way that BAI demonstrates our commitment to strengthening the role of financial services companies in the payments business.

Key finds from this research will be presented at this year’s BAI Retail Delivery Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla., in an upcoming issue of BAI’s Banking Strategies and at BAI TransPay, scheduled February 23-25, 2009 in San Diego.
