Evidence mounts that consumers are willing to undergo some inconvenience in order to protect themselves against online fraud. A survey by Atlanta-based Synergistics Research Corp. finds that 85% of respondents were willing to take extra security steps when logging onto financial institution Web sites; only 15% were not willing. The Synergistics survey of 1,000 Internet users was conducted in July and August of 2005.

... Payroll cards are used mainly by un-banked employees, right? Not according to Conshohocken, Pa.-based Ecount, a provider of prepaid card programs. Ecount's random survey of 2,000 of its account holders found that 54% of payroll cards are held by employees with banking relationships. The company said many of the banked employees put up to 20% of the payroll check on the cards and then use it for big-ticket purchases, such as a TV or vacation.
